Elementary School Integrity Lessons Meet Fashion

In St. Louis, lessons on student integrity meet fashion in Jim Triplett’s fifth grade classroom.
 
At Gateway Elementary School, a class of all boys walks in every morning and shake their teachers hand … and then they put on their ties.
 
In Triplett’s classroom, ties symbolize success. He teaches his students that integrity is doing the right thing even when it’s hard and even when no one is watching. His students know that in Triplett’s classroom, earning the right to wear a tie is done by demonstrating integrity, scoring 80 percent or higher on exams and participating in class.
